Matthew G. Whitaker (born October 29, 1969) is an American lawyer and the acting Attorney General of the United States. He was appointed to be the Acting Attorney General following the departure of Attorney General Jeff Sessions from the Trump Administration. Whitaker has previously served in the Justice Department as the Chief of Staff to the Attorney General and as the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Iowa. Whitaker also ran as a Republican candidate in the June 3, 2014, primary election for United States Senate election in Iowa.
