During the attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, Hamas-led militants abducted 251 people and took them into Gaza. The captives included civilians, soldiers, and foreign nationals.
Over the course of the conflict, some hostages were released through exchange deals or military operations, and some were killed in captivity. The last 20 surviving hostages were released on October 13, 2025, as part of a ceasefire agreement.
