This has been the most useless, insincere, two-faced Parliament in our history
19 OCTOBER 2019
Rob Wilson - MPs will have a deserved reckoning at the ballot box - It was billed as "Super Saturday" in Parliament, the moment when, finally, the Government would get Brexit over the line, allowing the public to move on from the political insanity that has captured the country. In the event, the day turned out to be anything but super - unless you happen to be a rugby fan.
And speaking in rugby terms, today went roughly as follows. The Prime Minister picked up the ball which had fallen loose from the scrum, ran powerfully for 87 metres with opposition players bouncing off him. Yet just as he drove over the try line in the 79th minute to win the game, a member of his own team, Oliver Letwin, deliberately kicked the ball out of his hands. Why he would that do that today was inexcusable.
He has not simply damaged a Conservative Party that was finally uniting around a common Brexit position. His behaviour has brought shame on Parliament and all its MPs. Internationally we look a mess, barely even a rabble, and the delay will inevitably swell existing anger and division.
A large public majority, already exasperated with the clever Parliamentary games and constant deceptions of MPs, now know that the only deal Parliament will accept is remaining in the EU via the route of a second referendum. Within seconds of the amendment passing, MPs were tweeting out triumphant selfies, while the Stop Brexit crowds in Parliament Square cheered. The Letwin Amendment's true purpose is abundantly clear; another delay, the same can being kicked down the road for years, anything to get us closer to a second referendum.
It is hard to exaggerate the bitterness and fury this latest delay will unleash from Brexit voters, whose instructions to Parliament were clear and remain unfulfilled. We know that a good number of Labour MPs were already so concerned by the growing anger in their constituencies that they were prepared to vote for the PM’s deal – even against their party whip and leader’s instructions. They hoped this would demonstrate their goodwill to their constituents and save themselves.
Unfortunately, things will get much worse for those in Leave seats. The public was already at the end of its tether, exasperated that the democratic will of the people had been blocked. The General Election could unleash carnage at the ballot box, with once sizeable Labour majorities reduced to dust as public anger turns to fury.
This has been the most useless, insincere, two-faced Parliament in our history, one that has allowed the constitution to rupture and democracy to be trashed and dishonoured. A reckoning is coming, because Parliament has made it impossible for the public to either forgive or forget the behaviour of some MPs. Voters know now, beyond doubt, that they are stuck with many dismal representatives. But MPs cannot put off their collision with the public for much longer. For them, Super Saturday has become The Long Goodbye.
