Torah Portion: Numbers 19:1-22:1
Chukat (“Law Of”) opens by describing the process of burning the red heifer and using its ashes for purification. It also tells the stories of the deaths of Miriam and Aaron, Moses’ striking of a rock to bring forth water, a plague of venomous snakes, and battles against the Emorite kings Sihon and Og.

December 21, 2012, was the date when some believed the Mayan calendar predicted the end of the world. While the Maya calendar did end a 5,125-year cycle on this date, it was a misconception that this signified an apocalypse.

The fast commemorates the destruction of both the First Temple and Second Temple in Jerusalem, which occurred about 655 years apart, but on the same Hebrew calendar date. Tisha B’Av is never observed on Shabbat.

Torah Portion: Deuteronomy 3:23-7:11
Vaetchanan (“I Pleaded”) opens as Moses describes his pleading with God to be allowed into the Land of Israel. Moses warns the Israelites not to pursue idolatry and recounts the giving of the Ten Commandments. The portion also contains the Shema, a declaration of faith and a central text in Jewish prayer.

Barack Obama's second term officially began on January 20, 2013. There was a private swearing-in on that date, followed by a public ceremony on January 21.
