Paleo Conservative... Casey debate

  • Key Figures: Often associated with figures like Pat Buchanan, Samuel Francis, and historically rooted in the "Old Right" of the 1940s-50s.
Origins and Distinctions:
  • Paleo vs. Neo: Paleoconservatives arose in the 1970s/80s in response to neoconservatives, who they viewed as "liberal Trojan horses" who hijacked the American right, focusing too much on global democracy-building and social engineering.
  • "America First": Their ideology shares significant similarities with current right-wing populist movements, such as the MAGA movement, focusing on patriotism and restoring the nation's unique character.
While sometimes characterized as far-right, they generally distinguish themselves by their opposition to foreign entanglement and their focus on traditional, socially cohesive communities rather than modern liberal democracy.
