Russian sailors killed after fire breaks out on nuclear submarine

Fourteen sailors died when a fire erupted aboard a Russian navy nuclear submarine conducting a survey of the sea floor in the country’s territorial waters, officials said.

The Losharik — an AS-12 deep-sea nuclear mini-sub — was carrying out a military survey when the fire broke out Monday night on, according to the Moscow Times, which cited a report on the Russian RBC news site.

The Russian Defense Ministry said the blaze was extinguished thanks to the self-sacrifice of the crew aboard the sub, which is now at the Arctic port of Severomorsk on the Barents Sea, the main base of Russia’s Northern Fleet.

“On July 1 in Russian territorial waters a fire broke out on board a deep-water scientific research vessel that was studying the marine environment of the world ocean on behalf of the Russian navy,” Interfax said, citing a ministry statement.

In the deadliest naval incident in post-Soviet Russia, the Kursk nuclear submarine exploded and sank on Aug. 12, 2000, during maneuvers in the Barents Sea, killing all 118 crew members.

K-152 Nerpa accident 11/8/2008

The K-152 Nerpa accident occurred aboard the Russian submarine K-152 Nerpa on 8 November 2008, which resulted in the deaths of 20 people and injuries to 41 more. The accident was blamed on a crew member who was allegedly playing with a fire suppressant system that he thought was not operative. Freon gas was released inside two compartments of the submerged submarine during the vessel's sea trials in the Sea of Japan. Victims were asphyxiated or suffered frostbite in their lungs. The high casualty count was attributed in part to the large number of civilians on board who were assisting with the acceptance testing. Three of the dead were military personnel and the rest were civilians from the Vostok, Zvezda, Era, and Amur shipbuilding yards.[1] The incident was the worst Russian submarine disaster since the sinking of Kursk in 2000.
