Lloyd's of London

Lloyd's of London was established in 1688 by Edward Lloyd, who opened a coffee house on Tower Street in London. This coffee house became a popular hub for merchants, shipowners, and sea captains to discuss insurance, primarily for maritime risks.

  • 1688: Edward Lloyd establishes the coffee house, which becomes a focal point for shipping insurance.
  • 1774: The society moves to the Royal Exchange on Cornhill.
  • 1871: Lloyd's is incorporated by an act of Parliament.
